FLASH FLOODING IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS

A recent flash flood has the islands of Solomon leaving 21 dead, 40 missing, and 49,000 homeless. The flooding had been cause by severe rain from a tropical depression last Thursday. While that created a big impact on the people, the main reason why people were left homeless was due to the reason of Matanikau River which busted its banks destroying thousands of homes and flooding the downtown area. Due to the devastating damages, the government had to declare a state of emergency this Saturday. While an emergency has been declared, the World Vision Aid agency has said that the domestic airport terminals have been flooded as well, making help harder to reach.
Though most of the cities are flooded, 11 evacuation centers have been set up sheltering 11,000 people. Reports are saying that water supplies and the infrastructure including electricity and sewage have been damaged. In spite of recent disaster, Australia has pledged at least $50,000 in funds to support the islands and the flood reliefs. New Zealand has also helped the islands by contributing $251,000. Even though the islands were struck by a bad flood, it is nice to see other countries lending a hand and helping them.
